"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
Jo M. Guerrero tells the following story: My five-year-old daughter, Barbara, had disobeyed me and had been sent to her room. After a few minutes, I went in to talk with her about what she had done. Teary-eyed, she asked, "Why do we do wrong things, Mommy?" "Sometimes the devil tells us to do something wrong," I replied, "and we listen to him. We need to listen to God instead." To which she sobbed, "But God doesn't talk loud enough!"
Peter couldn't be more clear: WATCH OUT!! PAY ATTENTION!! DON'T GET DISTRACTED!! What we don't realize is that there IS an enemy. He's more than just a figure or symbol of evil. He is evil. He has been studying our weaknesses for the entirety of our lives up to the present. He knows and seeks out our struggles. We can not walk blindly through life hoping and wishing that we'll skate on through and be OK. We have to be listening...to the right voice. We have to be alert and aware of where we are weak. We have to come to the hard but real truth that our own will power is never enough. We must depend upon the strength of a Mighty God, and stand up underneath the shadow of His all encompassing wings.
No matter how intimately close you get in your relationship with Jesus, never get to the place where you think that you have no struggles, or that you think that you have become immune to temptations. Yes, God is powerful, but unless you continue to remember every area of your life is in need of Him, and surrender those areas to His power, you become a sitting target for that hungry lion! Remember this: You and I are both sinners saved by grace. We are still desperately dependent upon His grace, His strength, and His shelter. Oh how we need Him! Stay focused on Him, aware of your weaknesses, and confident that He is able to strengthen you. Stay on guard!
