"When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the walls" (Nehemiah 12:30).
Before they focused on the walls, symbolically how they were seen by people, the gates, which was their access to what was beyond, or even their own people, those who would follow them, they first focused on their own relationship with God. When that became their priority, then they would have both the integrity and the right passion to proceed. No matter how many people they would lead into relationship with God, it all came down to one: their own relationship with God.
Is the same not true in our own lives as well? How can we lead, when we're not first following? Our first priority relationship is with Jesus - to purify ourselves before Him to give Him the whole of all we are going through. THEN, we are able to truly receive all He has for us in our call to be Godly influencers.
Everything we are depends upon this truth. It all comes down to one, one relationship with God - our own. We must remain so passionately and intimately close to Jesus; always measuring ourselves to His standard, allowing Him to purge us and prepare us for who He's created and called us to be. THEN, we can lead. But first, we will follow. We will never be able to lead until we learn to follow. We must follow Jesus. He is the author and perfector of our faith and all that He has purposed, designed, and destined for our lives. Choose Him today, to follow Him, to surrender to Him, to live in obedience to Him.
Maybe you'd like to pray with me today a prayer that I'm constantly praying myself: Lord Jesus, I surrender to You. This day is yours. Live through me. I pray that every word, attitude, thought and deed would honor you. I choose to follow You. Amen.
